However, when the Ortho Evra Transdermal Birth Control patch was linked to potentially deadly blood clots, this trust was shattered for nearly one million women across the country. Purging (vomiting or laxatives) are not present, but there may be intervals of repetitive diets or fasts. Body weight can range from normal to severe obesity. Compulsive eating is a behavior driven by desire to reduce anxiety rather than by feelings of hunger. Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors reduce anxiety and distress, but they create a self-perpetuating cycle. The eating activity provides temporary relief, but it is followed by further distress in the form of guilt, shame, and disgust. This often leads to a vicious cycle of binge eating and depression. Compulsive eating can be a behavior used to fill a void, suppress uncomfortable emotions, cope with problems or to create a state of numbness to everything that is going on. Triggers can be anxiety, depression, stress, boredom or loneliness, dieting, and low self-esteem. Self-criticism will not stop the eating behavior. Diets make the problem worse. At first there may be some weight loss success, but with the hunger and restriction eventually comes a binge response. This overeating episode brings in feelings of failure and even more depression. Will power will not cure compulsive overeating. Creating rules around eating will not solve the problem. Compulsive overeating is a coping behavior that must be recognized as such and dealt with by learning and incorporating other behaviors which are at least as effective as eating. When you notice fish vanishing mysteriously, think heron especially in the spring and beginning of summer when new, baby herons need feeding. Grown herons consume almost a pound of fish daily. Erecting a net six to twelve inches above the water of your pond proves the most successful method in protecting fish. Tautness is critical, though. Some herons may try landing right on top of it, and when it collapses, will impale fish right through the netting. Gadgets used to frighten herons are fairly effective. With some, when the bird trips a wire, noise scares it away sometimes inaudible to humans, depending on the type. Infrared-detection devices spray jets of water to scare them off. Some people try plastic herons because of the herons territorial reputation and the fact that the birds dont like to feed near other herons. These work pretty well until mating season rolls around. Then these faux herons may actually serve as heron magnets. Limiting heron access to your pond may be the best idea yet. Plant densely growing, tall marginal pond plants around your water garden and make the pond sides steep, with water at least a foot below the pond edge. If the birds cant reach the water, they cant reach the fish, and hopefully, theyll fly off to better fishing luck elsewhere.
